I was initially drawn to the Read theme for the clean design and apparent attention put to typography.
Although I’m still very happy with the theme and I am by no means particularly good at CSS coding I have found a few limitations that I didn’t expect; I also have some extra questions that are really just me being a thick :)
Here they go:
– As specified in another thread there seems to be a problem with the implementation of Google Font italics somehow. Even on Google Fonts that have specific italic versions like Cardo and Crimson Text, the italics are not used; fake “oblique” ones are created instead. This is quite obvious and rather unseemly on a clean layout.
– FontMeister doesn’t seem to integrate at the moment; There is a Font Family option on the visual editor that displays fonts that have been imported with FontMeister but they default to Times New Roman.
– CSS3 now can access extended OpenType features like ligatures, small caps and “oldstyle” numerals. I have found no way to use those; is there a way to apply them on Google Fonts that I know contain them, like the aforementioned Cardo and Crimson Text?
Example of what I’m talking about: http://blog.fontdeck.com/post/15777165734/opentype-1
– Now the Cardo font comes to your site with its italic and bold styles, finally select it from Appearance > Customize > Fonts to apply to your content.
