    How do I upload my own repeating background image for the whole site?

    Also, is there a way to put a static image behind the book so that it shows to the left and right of it before it is opened?

    Go to appearance > customize > static front page.

    You can use this custom css code for repeating background image;

    .rm-wrapper > div > div { background: #eee url("url-here") 0 0 repeat; }

    When I do that I loose the book cover
