I would like to change the order of the departments in the portfolio, so they do not appear in alphabetic order but in the order I’d like them to be. I cannot seem to find how to do that.

What kind of order do you want make?

I would like to control the order to put it in order of ‘importance’.
For now that would be: 4,3,2,1 but it might change if I decide to change the department subjects.
Is there any way I can influence the order other than by re-naming them?

This is not possible by default, needs more further customization, you may consider working with a professional, if you are not familiar to WordPress coding.
