How do I create Custom Functions.php file for my Readme theme?

    I recently created a child theme.

    In order to optimize my site I thought of adding few more functions. I added them previously but when I updated to the newer version they disappeared.

    Then I read something about custom functions.php file. How do I create it for my theme?
