Hello,

I love readme template, and so i bought it :-) Now i am trying to translate it into german. Hard work, i know. But things need to be done!

So i took your documentation and it says, that i should use the Codestyling localisation Plugin. But there is none: https://wordpress.org/plugins/codestyling-localization

So i went on and just translated everything i found english in the en_US.po file in the languages folder and loaded it unto my server.

I guess some things got translated. But a lot of stuff not. Like Reading time, or comments in the subtitle.
So i wonder what i should do translate them.

Hi @DroidBoy;
You can also try Poedit editor. Don’t forget to export .mo file after translating. But first, scan all theme files and start with a new .po file.

Well, thats only possible with the pro-Version.

So besides that i really have to crawl php-files?

Hi, you can use the Loco Translate plugin. ( https://wordpress.org/plugins/loco-translate/ )

– install and activate the plugin,

– go to plugin page,

– find your theme,

– delete existing .po and .pot files,

– create a new template(.pot), save,

– create a new translation for your language.

Thank you for your attempts right now.

Unfortunetally the Loco Translate PLugin tells me, that this theme is not ready for beeing translated. This is because there is nothing in the pot file it seems.

I tried several things. First i did what you told me. But i could only see 5 strings to translate and that was something like “Pixelwars”, which makes of course no sense.

Than i tried to find out by myself, but i was not able to make it work.

So i took the beginners guide and went through it step by step: https://localise.biz/help/wordpress/translate-plugin/beginners

And now it shows me just thoise 5 strings again. I believe tthis theme is not ready to get translated. Say it! :D

I need to crawl through the php files. Say it! :D

To be fair, i just see every theme has the same problem.
Let me check out, what is the problem with my wordpress installation.
I am really wondering now why it is so hard to translate a theme. Should it just be a single text file which works? :-)

Thank you very much. I donwloaded it, but it seems my wordpress install is having issues too, as the plugin is not working with any theme. (i am having wp 4.3.1 in german)

So i am asking the plugin devs for support, keeping you up to date how things turn out.

Allright, i did it. :-)

With your provided pot-File I was able to translate everything with the free Version of poedit.
Uploaded and working! \o/

No WordPress plugin needed for that.

I just found a small thing to optimize: the read time is provided on different places like that: 5 min read. In German i would even change that min to Min, because we are crazy folks. But as far as i can see its not mentioned in the pot file. If you add that so that we can translate even that, you make me feel very cosy :-)

If you want to refresh your wordpress installation, just go to Dashboard > Updates, and re-install it.

You can create a new topic about the “reading time”. It is provided by a script, so it is not a wordpress related issue directly. A front-end developer will respond to you.

I just bought the read theme and would also like to run my site in German and I’m wondering if you could point out what the easiest way to do this is.
I read in your documentation that I can use the “Codestyling Localization plugin or Poedit editor”. But before I go through the long process of trial and error, perhaps you could share again how you finally made it work.

Hi, I downloaded the read.pot file and from it created a .po and .mo files in Spanish. Then uploaded them through the Ftp but it doesn’t work…

Hi Serkan, in the languages folder I do have both .po and .mo file with the Spanish translation plus the index.php. However it doesn’t work, not even after downloading the Loco plugin.

There is one golden rule for the proper functioning of the localization. You need to choose language file which WordPress uses after clicking new language. You need to look at that site in WordPress, which was established in the country language. Settings > General > Site Language
Find your theme from logo plugin translate page and click to new language and change the words and save it. Go to your language file in your theme file and you can see it there.
1.Create a languages subdirectory in your plugin or theme’s root directory
2.Ensure this directory writeable by the web server
3.ind the theme or plugin in the list at Loco Translate > Manage Translations
4.Click + New language and follow the on-screen prompts.

the terms don’t show up in the .po file
the only terms with “archive” that I can translate are:
Author Archives
Date Archives
Post Archives

I also noticed that some how a term that I had translated “continue reading”, which worked before now is not being translated again.
“Continue reading →”
I have copied the .po and .mo files to the read/languages folder again and I don’t understand why it is working for most of the translations I added and for this one it doesn’t…
weird.
Any suggestions?

Hi,

You can find a read.pot localization file in the latest release of the read theme. And everything inside it.

It is easy to create translation files from a pot file.

Just install and activate Loco Translate plugin.

Go to plugin page and find your theme, then click “New language” link.

thanks for adding the read.pot file with all the words used by the theme in it.
This solved my problem.

For anyone new to this, here is what I did:
I used poedit to create a new de_DE.po file from the read.pot file, added all the translations I needed (poedit had the ones I had already translated as suggestions still saved), saved it als .po and .mo files locally and then I uploaded them via ftp to the language folder of the read theme.

All works well.
