Instead of a profile picture is it possible to add a video in that area? If so, how would this be done?

What kind of video?

Ideally it would be a video file I upload to my server but it could also be an embedded youtube or vimeo video.

You can use inline video shortcode.

When I try to embed a youtube video using the Inline video shortcode to the homepage I only get a black box. Screenshot is at: http://rhonapierce.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/ProfileVideo.png

The shortcode I used was:
[inline_video][/inline_video]

strangely the video only shows up in IE but not in firefox or safari. Any ideas?
