    Can I customize the background image? Ideally, I’d like the background of all content to have a white overlay, so that it won’t be hard to read against a geometric background image.

    Hi,
    You can add background image for entire website via this custom css code;

    body { background-image: url(#); }

    If you only play with the background color, you can change the color through the theme customizer.
