I’ve looked at the documentation, and it seems that the “chat” post type is as easy as typing in the transcript…but when I do that it doesn’t format like the example in the Bloggy preview. Any ideas on why that is?

Hi, write it like in this format:

JOHN: Hey there

MARY: This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from.

JOHN: What is this

SMITH: Aye, matey!

JOE: Huh?

I did that, but the formatting didn’t look like the example on the bloggy theme. The names were not bolded, underlined, etc.

Is the formatting supposed to be that way?

Switch to Text tab of the editor and remove spaces between the lines.
