create homepage like the blogger 'john'

Hi, could you please explain me the steps for creating a homepage like ‘john’?

my website is http://www.simonekrouwer.com

I don’t know how to get both the intro and the ‘latest from the blog’ widget.
I cannot find this widget in the list.

Do I need to create a static home page? thanks for your help

Hi,
First of all, I recommend you to create a static homepage then choose latest posts template on the right-hand side of the page and save it.
Then go to settings > reading > and choose the homepage as the front page.
Also, the menu looks very messy. Go to dashboard > appearance > menu > under the menu settings choose theme navigation menu box and save it.
