Is it possible to have the same custom sidebar functionality for the blog posts as you already have for the pages?

It would be great to be able to display different sidebars depending on what category/content they have.

Hi Trusten,
Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > You can see blog sidebar and page sidebar here.
You can not control the sidebar depending on what category/content but you can set up the general blog sidebar.

I know, but the Theme has the option to create custom sidebars for “page templates”, is it possible to add that feature to the blog posts?

It is not possible by default. You can try to use third party of plugin for this feature.
