Distorted Featured Image When Blog Link Shared in Social Media Feeds

    Sometimes when we share a link on different social media sites, it will distort how the graphic is displayed. It seems to display properly on Facebook and Google+. The main problem has been with LinkedIn. But that is our most important platform. I haven’t been able to figure out what is different that causes some of them to be displayed this way. Most of them, even on LinkedIn, look good. But occasionally it shows up and looks really bad.

    Here’s a screenshot from something I just posted this morning: http://monosnap.com/image/HIVd7S6LqxRpJ68VerLVepOL7m9D6J

    Here is the link to the actual blog post: http://keithrosen.com/2008/11/when-managers-confuse-coaching-with-conceding-to-your-team/

    For several hundred blog posts I’ve tried doing the same thing. I populate the “Featured Image” section with that image and then also embed the same image at the top of each blog in order to get it to display the way we want it to.

    We have noticed this for several months but weren’t sure if it was Hoot Suite, LinkedIn, or the theme that was causing the problem. But just yesterday we received an email that one of our blogs was featured in someone else’s newsletter. Look at the 2nd article on the list titled, “9 Questions Managers Ask That Kill Sales” here: http://app.flashissue.com/newsletters/204e848c2ec8882586d0ea81611189b50b30497f

    Notice how the image is distorted the same way? This seems to point to how our site is serving up data, doesn’t it? Because this is a direct link from our site. Neither Hoot Suite or LinkedIn are at play here.

    Here is the link to that particular blog post: http://keithrosen.com/2014/11/9-questions-managers-ask-that-kill-sales/

    A secondary issue which seems to happen occasionally but not near as often and isn’t near as important as the image color distortion is how it displayed a thumbnail of a graphic that is in the footer of the blog as opposed to the first main graphic in the blog which is also the featured image.

    Can you see if we are structuring our blog posts improperly that might be causing this or if there’s something about how the theme is functioning that is causing this?

    Thanks so much!

    Any thoughts? My client is pretty upset and demanding I fix this. He’s a best-selling author with a significant following on LinkedIn and is very particular about his brand and what people see that are connected to his name. I don’t know what to do other than use a different theme and I really, really don’t want to do all that work just to fix distorted images when sharing links from our website. This is what my LinkedIn feed looked like this morning with stuff from his blog: http://monosnap.com/image/ABspChCJl3rn9Da5Rfkxnw8DpaEOoW

    Hi, this is a really weird issue. I just made some tests about it and here are the results;

    – It doesn’t occur when i try to share a post on our Responsy Wp demo site, all images look fine.

    – It is not about Responsy Theme, i just used the same image on a different theme and it looks distorted when i try to share on linked in too.

    – then i converted it to png and tried sharing on linkedin again and it looks fine this time.

    I have no idea why is that particular image(.jpg format) looks distorted on linked in. But it is not about the theme, it looks same with another theme. Here is what you can do from now on;

    – convert distorted images to png format, (as a temporary solution )
    – contact linked in support about this issue : https://help.linkedin.com/app/home
    – create a topic about it at : http://stackoverflow.com/

    I would be happy if you share the reason of the distortion when you know it.

    Thank you so much for taking some time to test this. I would have even been happy converting all the images to .png files but that doesn’t seem to be making much of a difference for me. Here it is after I updated it to a .png format: http://monosnap.com/image/qZBc7gRrDTXasDDQWoRANBEJmcK5eJ

    And I tested it in a couple different browsers.

    And oddly enough, I found a post that looked good on LinkedIn that was a .jpg format: http://monosnap.com/image/PBKSaiKKK39Pr7spL67jp32emXK1A9

    I’ll submit it to LinkedIn support, but the fact that the image of the post displayed with the exact same image distortion on both LinkedIn and inside of the email newsletter (see first link in my first post here) seems to indicate that it’s not a LinkedIn issue since those two aren’t related. Not to mention that I’ve never seen any other image on LinkedIn with a similar distortion.

    I even just scanned through this forum to find a couple other sites using the Reponsy theme and tested links to their blogs in LinkedIn and these all look fine. Not sure what’s up with ours.

    It should be fine when you converted to png but social media sites apply caching, so you may be seeing the old corrupted image, try changing the slug of the url and then check it again.
