When I start a post with [drop_cap] and end the first paragraph with [/drop_cap], the preview on the home page shows the first few lines of the second paragraph. I would like to have the preview show the first few lines of the first paragraph.

What can I do?

Take a look at the top post: Buddha, ….
The post previews the 2nd para; I believe it is because the post‘s first para starts with a drop_cap.

Hi, it seems like drop cap feature is having a conflict with the automatic excerpt feature, as a solution you can copy the first paragraph of your post to Excerpt field in the Post Edit screen.

Hi,
Please go to posts > edit related post > check the excerpt box > you can customize it.
If you cannot see the excerpt box, on the page editor screen, click on the screen options button on the upper right corner of the screen. This will open a fly down menu where you need to check the excerpt box. Once you have checked the excerpt box, scroll down and you will find excerpt box on the post editor screen.
