I’m trying to remove the sidebar from the Photographer theme.
I’m pretty new to this (so not as familiar with the work-arounds) so would love any help I can take.

Hi, you can disable it from theme options > blog.

Set to “No” the sidebar options from Appearance > Theme Options > Blog.

I meant in terms of editing the theme in general.. is html necessary for the general alteration or is it just interactive?

Just play with the theme options. The theme doesn’t call the html of sidebar if it disabled.
