The default spacing around pictures is a bit excessive for my tastes. Is there a way to change how much space comes before and after a photo.

Hi, you have break line elements br just after and before your image which increases the white space around the image, click Text tab on the content editor and remove these br elements, if it is still too much white space for you, play with this custom css code;
