I’ve read the portfolio section of the documentation – and indeed the entire documentation for the theme – multiple times.

The site is already set to “post name” as permalink setting, as per the documentation (Installation -> WordPress Settings).

However, I was able to solve the problem by myself. For anyone else experiencing a similar issue:

Portfolio departments do not work unless there is at least one sub-department for that portfolio department. In order to get a portfolio department to work, add a sub-department to it. You can now add it to your site menu and it will work.

    Two notes for Pixelwars:

    1) That functionality is loosely implied by the documentation, but it’s not at all clearly worded. Maybe consider getting an editor to review your documentation for readability?

    2) There’s really no reason a department page should throw a 404 unless it has a sub-department. Indeed, there’s no reason that anything your theme specifically allows the user to add to their site should throw a 404. I’d recommend raising this issue as a bug and fixing it in a subsequent release.
